-Account for species coexistence with resource-partitioning and niche theory.
-When species use resources in different ways or by partitioning the niche space
-Ex:/ Warbler birds share niche requirements but exhibit subtle differences which permit their coexistance. -As long as organisms are specialized, if resources are very diverse and/or population densities are low, many species may coexist equilibrally by partitioning the niche space available. |
-Explain the difference between deterministic and stochastic forces as they affect communities.
-Deterministic Forces - Predictable factors ex:/ carnivores will not eat plants
-Stochastic Forces - Unpredictable factors ex:/ carnivores will eat animal material but which individual animal? |
-Use facilitation as an alternative explanation to competition for coexistence.
-Facilitation:When one species benefits from the existence of another.
-Some plants cannot germinate, grow or survive unless they begin life in the shelter of an existing plant. -Facilitation can be thought of more broadly when thinking of ecosystem engineer |
-Differentiate and explain the roles of the following species types in ecosystems: foundation/ dominant species, ecosystem engineer, keystone species.
-Foundation/dominant species: An ecosystem engineer that is also large and or competitive. Provide structure and food for many. Ex:/ Sea Kelp, Mussels, Spruce. Major consumers and holders of resources.
-Ecosystem engineer: A species has non-competitive structuring effects on its surroundings influencing many other species. Ex:/ Amphipod firms mud and creates raised islands in sand. Nursing logs. beavers -Keystone species: Consumes many different animal species but has preferences. A keystone species maintains species richness by eating its prey and regulates competitive interactions between its prey. Ex:/ Sea stars and mussels -Removal of sea stars increases the mussel’s competition strength and wipes out it’s competitors. -Think indirect interactions |
-Explain the difference between direct and indirect species-interactions, and describe how both types of interactions contribute to the determination of community structure.
-Direct species interactions ex:/ pred/prey interactions, fascilitation
-Indirect species interactions ex:/ Keystone species, ecosystem engineers, dominant species. |
