what is amplitude?
amplitude is the maximum height reached by a wave from it's equilibrium point measured in db.
When amplitude increases what happens to the sound? What happens when it decrease?
Increase: louder
decrease: quieter
what happens to the light when amplitude in a n EM wave increases? Decreases?
increase: brighter
decrease: Less bright
What is the decibel scale used for?
To measure the power of sound.
what kind of a scale is it?
logarithmic scale, adding 3db doubles the sound level ex: 83 is 2x louder than 80db which is 2x louder than 77db
What is frequency?
It's the number of deformations (or cycles) produced per unit of time, usually per second. measure in Hertz (hz)
What happens to the sound in the frequency increase? Decreases?
Increase: higher pitch
Decrease: lower pitch
What happens when frequency in a light wave increases? Decreases?
increase: more energy
decrease: less energy
What is a wavelength ?
It's the distance between two identical deformations. Measured in nanometers (nm) or meters or (cm)...
What is the dangerous level in decibel scale that can cause irreparable damage to the ear ?
Prolonged exposure to a level above 80db.
Name (in order) the waves on the EM spectrum.
1. Radio waves 2.microwaves 3.infrared rays 4.visible light 5.Ultraviolet rays 6.x-rays 7. gamma rays
what is some of the functions of radio waves ?
less frequency but high wave length and is transmitted with antennas. Use: Radio and T.V
What is some of the functions of microwaves?
Satellite transmission in cellphones, internet and used for microwave ovens
What is some of the functions of infrared rays?
To put off head, you can't see it but you can feel it. ex: incubators.
What is the function of visible light?
provides plants with the energy they need for photosynthesis,l can be transformed---> electricity
what is the function of ultraviolet rays ?
black lights, sunburn, tanning...
What is the function of x-rays?
x-rays
What is the function of gammarays?
they can cause genetic mutation, cancer, but when used properly destroy cancerous cells in radiation therapy.
what is the focal point of a lens ?
the focal point of a lens is when the rays converge toward a precise point in the axis of the lens
what is a concave lens associated with ?
diverging lens
What is a conve lens associated with ?
A converging lens
What is Myopia ?
Not being able to see from far.
What causes myopia?
caused by a slightly elongated eyeball or an overly curved lens.
How can Myopia be treated?
This can be corrected with a concave lens.
What is hyperopia ?
Only seing clearly from a distance.
What causes hyperopia?
A slythly shortened eyeball or not enough of a curved lens.
How can hyperopia be treated?
With a biconvex lens.
