How will a cork behave in water when waves are present ?

The cork will only Bob up and down

It will not move in the direction the wave .

What does a transverse wave do?

Causes particles in a medium(the substance the wave travels though)to vibrate at a right angle to the direction of the waves motion

What examsple shows hoe transverse waves work

A mexican eave is an exsmplr of ehat type of wave ?

Transverse- the people stand up and sit down in one place but the wave moves perpendicular to the people

Describe a spring vibration experiment

Hold one end in a fixed position

Move the other end up and down

Observe a wave moving from towards the fixed end of the spring

Longitudinal waves do what?

Cause the mediums particles to vibrate in the same direction as the waves motion.

What is the period of a wave

The time taken to complete one oscillation, (vibration)

How is the period of a wave measured?

Period =1÷frequency

Period is measured in seconds

What is frequency?

The number of oscillations per second

How is frequency calculated?

Frequency =number of oscillations÷time

Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz)

What is meant by amplitude of a wave?

Largest distance a wave moves from it's rest position. I. E ( distance from the rest position of a wave to the top of a waves peak)

What is meant by wavelength?

Distance between two adjacent wave fronts . For transverse waves this is the distance between two peaks next to eachother

Describe how to do the ripple tank experiment ?

A rod at one end of a tank creates a series of ripped in water.

A bright light is shone through the tank onto paper and the ripple of the water shoe ad a series of parallel lines

These ripples are called wave fronts

What is the equation for wave speed

Wave speed (m/s)= frequency(Hz) × wavelength (m)
