What specific incident does "Watergate" refer to?
The attempt (lying) by Nixon and his aides to cover up the burglary on June 22, 1972 of the Democratic National Convention headquarters located in the Watergate hotel in DC.
What is "impeachment"
The political process of accusing a political official of wrongdoing. In the case of Nixon, Congress recommends impeachment of Nixon.
What factors contributed to Nixon's involvement in the Watergate scandal?
Nixon feared losing elections, specifically the 1972 presidential election.
Nixon thought that that the presidency and the executive branch were more powerful and more important than the other two branches of government.
Nixon loved secrecy.
Nixon had close aides who believed these things as well.
What was the Committee to Reelect the President? CReeP?
Group to help Nixon run and win in 1972. The head of this group is connected with the Watergate break in.
What did the Nixon team do once the burglary was discovered?
Cover it up, destroy the documents, lie to federal officials about who was involved, lie under oath.
Why did Nixon finally have to stop lying about the Watergate burglary?
Because one of Nixon's aides revealed that Nixon TAPED evey one of his conversations and so if Senate investigators could hear the tapes, then they could determine if Nixon was involved.
What was the SATURDAY NIGHT MASSACRE?
It refers to the struggles to get control of the Watergate tapes. Nixon does not want to turn them over, he wants his attorney general to fire the special prosecutor, his attorney general quits rather than obey the order. Two attorney generals later, the prosecutor is fired but he new special prosecutor goes after the tapes.
Why did vice president Spiro Agnew (from Maryland!) resign in the middle of all this?
Because he had been taking bribes when he was governor of Maryland.
Who was nominated to be vice president when Agnew resigned?
Gerald Ford, he was the minority leader of the House.
Why did the House of Representatives impeach Nixon?
Obstruction of justice, abuse of power and contempt of Congress for refusing to obey a subpeona to release all the tapes.
When did Nixon hand over the tapes to Congress?
August 5, 1974
Why were the tapes considered a "smoking gun"?
Because they proved that Nixon knew about the burglary and that he covered up the investigation and obstructed the FBI.
Did the House Vote to impeach Nixon?
No, because he resigned the presidency before he could be impeached.
