Water - Properties of Water
1. Water is made up of particles of hydrogen and oxygen (H2O)
2. Pure water is colorless odourless and tasteless.
3. The boiling point of pure water is 100 ° c
The freezing point of pure water is 0° c
4. Water is liquid over a wide range of temperature. (between 0° & 100°)
5. Pure water is neutral i.e it is neither an acid nor base (alkali)
6.Water has a very high surface tension.

pH indicates how acidic or alkaline a substance is . (i.e the degree of acidity ) As shown above.

Litmus is red in acids and blue in alkalis.

Cohesion and Adhesion
Cohesion: the force of attraction between like particles e.g. water and water particles.

Adhesion: the force of attraction between unlike particles e.g. glass and water

Capilliarity -the rise of a liquid in capillary (a narrow tube)
This is due to the strong adhesion of water particles to the tube.

Adhesion takes place before cohesion.
Investigating Capillarity
The narrower the tube ,the higher the water rises.
bore = opening in tube

Xylem - tubes that transport water from the root to the leaves in plants

Phloem - transports food from leaves to the other parts of the plant.
