What are the reasons why the Yangtze river is polluted?

Millions of gallons of sewage is dumped into it along with chemicals from agriculture runoff and industrial wastes. Nitrogen from fertlizers and arsenic which is a poison from industrial uses are leading pollutants found in the Yangtze's waters.

What is happening to the plants and animals that live in the rivers?

Many species of plants and animals that once lived in the river are disapearing.

Why is the water color blue-green?

The high levels of nitrogen and phosphates lead to the growth of blue-green algae

Why is the growth of blue-green algae bad?

The growth reduces the amount of oxygen in the water causing fish to die. Also Chinese people catch contaminated fish which then leads to other health problems

What is China doing to help water pollution?

China is building more water treatment facilities that would treat the water and remove contaminants. Also they are encouraging cities along the river to build sanitary landfills where trash and waste would isolate the environment until it's safe rather than dumping garbage in the river
