Maritime climate
Coastal regions where the effects of the ocean influence rainfall and temperatures and are characterised by low but consistent rainfall throughout the year.
Monsoon
A period/season in a location’s yearly weather cycle that experiences heavy rainfall. This is in contrast to a ‘dry season’ which has decreased amounts of rainfall.
A Natural resource
Anything from nature that is useful to humans. Humans need natural resources for survival and to satisfy basic needs, for example food, clothing, shelter and water. Humans use plants, animals and water for food. Humans adapt natural resources into man-made products.
Orographic rainfall
Rainfall caused by warm moist air being uplifted over mountains; the water vapour condenses and falls as rain. Rain is usually more frequent on one side of the mountains – the other side is a rain shadow.
Permafrost
A section of soil that is below freezing for more than two years. Permafrost is found at high latitudes and elevations.
Precipitation
The process where small droplets of water in clouds combine into larger droplets that eventually become too heavy and fall as either rain, hail, snow or sleet.
Run-off
The process where the ground can no longer absorb any more moisture and excess water runs across the surface of land and flows into streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and dams.
Salinisation
The process of the land or soil becoming salty.
Scarcity
Insufficient supply or shortage.
Seasonal
One of four natural climatic divisions of the year, summer, autumn, winter and spring. Some climates also are divided into wet or dry seasons.
