Water cycle

The continuous recirculation of water

Screening

Passing water through a wire mesh to remove any floating debris like twigs, plastic bags ect

Settling

When the water flows into large tanks called settling tanks or sedimentation tanks . As the water flows into these tanks, aluminum sulfate (alum) is added to the water. The aluminum sulfate take the cloudiness out of the water and leaves the water clear. The cloudiness in the water is caused by small particles suspended in the water.

Filtration

The water is then passed through filter beds. These consist of layers of sand and gravel. The purpose of the filter beds is to ensure that even the smallest particles of dirt we removed from the water.

Chlorination

Small quantities of chlorine are added to the water to kill bacteria in the water. This process is often called disinfecting or sterilizing the water.

Fluoridation

Fluoride is added to the water as helps to prevent tooth decay in children

Water that does not easily form a lather with soap
