In the box below, explain why people were so motivated to move west. What "pushed" them from the Eastern cities? What "pulled" them to the West?
In the East, there was very little land to spare for new families trying to start lives as farmers. An economic depression also made jobs hard to mind, and many families lived in poverty. In the West, there was land of the taking. This land allowed people who could get there the beginnings of a prosperous life, and it was chiefly this opportunity that caused people to migrate. There was also the pull of Manifest Destiny that made people think that they had a divine purpose to go and civilize the western lands. There was also the draw of the west that was less populated, so there would be less religious persecution.
Which of the following is an example of a "push" factor for emigration?
religious persecution
Which of the following is a pull factor for immigration?
promise of land
In the box below, explain the role the railroad played in settling the West. Your answer should be 2-3 paragraphs long.
Before the transcontinental railroad was created, things and people had to be shipped to the west via rounding the tip of South America. Obviously, this route was very long and out of the way and made it very expensive and time consuming to get anything to the West. When the railroad was finished, people could now move themselves and items more quickly and less dangerously to the West.

The railroad race was also important to the civil war, as it was assumed that the territories the railroad went through would join the Union. This was important in keeping the moral up among the soldiers fighting the confederacy and gave the impression of a growing nation. The railroad allowed the Union to spread its influence West and to add more land to its borders.

In 2-4 paragraphs, explain why it is important to study Indian cultures as they existed before 1800. Why is it also important to understand the constitutional issues Indians face today?
Indian cultures prior to 1800 were less influenced by white culture than they are now. By studying early Indian cultures it leads to greater understanding of life in this area prior to the arrival of Europeans. This allows tribes today to re over some of the culture that they have lost during their long period of forced acclimation to European society. It also shows us how other cultures solved problems of resource scarcity and land use, which can teach us lessons for the future.

Issues facing Indians today are terribly ignored in mainstream society. The historical past of Indians affects how they are treated by the government today. Treaties that were signed in the 1800s are still being enforced today and being used to inform new treaties. The Native American population in the United States is quite large and must be treated with the respect owed to them as the original inhabitants of this land.
