Who were the Beauforts?

Prominent Lancastrian family. Major players in Hundred Years War as lacked land and wanted estates. Cardinal Beaufort (Bishop of Winchester) financed many campaigns, lending crown £200,000. Edmund Beaufort was made Duke of Somerset in 1448.

Who resented Suffolk and why?

York, because he felt he should have that power.

Why did Gloucester die?

Kept pushing for a major campaign in France however others all disagreed. In 1447 he was arrested and accused of treason. He died within days and there were rumours that Suffolk killed him.

Who do the Paston letters criticise?

Lord Say and William Crowmer in Kent, William Tailboys, Courtenays and Bonvilles, Northumberland and the Archbishop of York

Why was Suffolk hated?

Was given position of Lord Chamberlain although he was not most eligible, losses in France, didn't reverse losses, ruined finances of Britain, favoured his own people, limited King's access, increasing taxes, secret agreement about Maine being handed over in marriage, prevented William Tailboys from being murdered.

Why did no-one criticise the king?

Treason = death

When was Suffolk imprisoned and for what?

January 1450 for treason, losses in France, financial corruption, corrupting the legal system and misgovernment as well as encouraging the king of France to wage war in England

How did Suffolk die?

Was killed by pirates, having been spares and exiled by Henry.

How well did Henry use patronage?

Badly. He gave endowment to Eton and Kings college in 1440 and 1443. It became difficult to cover the costs of the king size household.

When was the Act of Resumption passes and what was it?

1450 and reversed his patronage. Another was passed the following year and was more successful.

Biggest issue caused by Henry's patronage?

Factional struggles, caused by Henry giving some families more than others.
