Missouri Compromise
First Congressional attempt to "deal" with slavery; Missouri became a slave state, Maine became a free state, and no slavery would be permitted above 36-30 parallel in the Louisiana Territory.
Manifest Destiny
The idea, promoted by John O'Sullivan-a newspaper reporter, that the United States was destined to settle the continent from sea to shining sea.
