What do oxotoxic drugs cause?
Profound, irreversible, sensorineural hearing loss.
What are examples of general types of oxotoxic drugs?
Broad spectrum antibiotics (e.g. aminoglycocides)

What is acoustic neuroma? What can it cause?
Benign tumour growth on the hearing and balance nerve (cranial nerve 8).

Can cause hearing loss, balance problems, and facial palsy.
What is the otoscope used for?
Examining the auditory meatus, and especially the tympanic membrane.
What does a normal eardrum look like?
White, semi-transparent (can vaguely see behind), vascularised around the eardrum and malleus
What are the 3 layers of the tympanic membrane?

1. Skin (stratified squamous epithelium) internally;
Epithelial migration away from TM;
then ceruminous glands (wax) glands incanal.

2. Fibro-collagenous core,
with many elastin fibres to provide strength.
Can become sclerotic.

3. Mucous membrane (low cuboidal
epithelium) internally, no goblets, continuous with the respiratory mucosa of the middle ear cavity, Eustachian tube etc.

What is otitus media?
- Middle ear infection/inflammation.
- Affects area between eardrum (end of the outer ear) and inner ear, including a duct known as the eustachian tube.
- Causes ear-ache
What does glue ear (Otitis Media with Effusion) look like?
Glue ear may make the drum yellow or even darker than normal.

Eardrum is retracted lateral process of the malleus is prominent.

Blood in the middle ear will give a blue or brown colour, called a haemotympanum.
