why is 4-5months the ideal time to introduce solids?
- the tongue extrusion reflex disappears
- the ability to coordinate suck and swallow of nonliquid foods is established, allowing spoon feeding
- infant can sit with support
- infant can indicate desire for food by opening mouth and leaning fwd or disinterest by leaning back and turning head
- Renal maturation during this period allows infant to handle the greater solute load derived from protein and minerals without excessive water loss

why is rice cereal and ideal first food?
(pre-cooked partially hydrolyzed rice cereal, with no gluten to sensitize the gut)
