1. Evaluate (the task/hazards) 2. Select (a course of action) 3. Assess (what risks are involved in your plan) 4. Decide (whether the risks are outweighed by the reward. Yes? Proceed to step 6) 5. Modify (can the task be made safer? 6. Proceed (but re-evaluate as the situation changes) |

What is the difference between friable and non-friable asbestos? |
Friability describes the ease with which asbestos fibres can become dislodged. Insulation products are looser and fibres may come off easily (friable). In product like cladding the fibres are bound within the material (non-friable). |
What are the 3 D’s of asbestos? (Factors contributing to the likelihood of being affected by asbestos-related disease) |
-Dose -Dimension of fibres -Durability (fibres ability to resist breakdown in the lungs) |

Explain GARS |
Greater Alarm Response system (GARS) is a highly structured predetermined response to any type of call. The risk/incident is classified and the number of appliances that respond is based on that classification. |
What are the call types (in relation to GARS)? |
-structure fire -non-structure fire -HAZMAT -EMR -Salvage (heavy rescue) -Trench -HART -USAR -grass and scrub fire (CFA) -Private Fire Alarm |
What are the 3 types of mains (water mains)? |
-Trunk mains -distribution mains -service mains (Pressure and flow should be considered when using mains) |
What are some safety considerations when gaining entry to a property/incident? |
-PPC/PPE -appropriate tools for the job and small gear safety -ensure safe working area -be aware of hostile environments you may encounter |
What is AIIMS/IMS, it’s key principles and it’s benefits? |
AIIMS (Australasian Inter Service Incident Management System) is the nationally recognised system of incident management. It provides: -a common framework for emergency services to manage an incident -can be applied to floods, cyclones, fire etc -is flexible (small and large scale incidents) -management by objectives -unity of command -span of control |
When making forced entry into a property consideration must be given to: |
-rescue procedures -location of fire -safety of personnel and appliance -most suitable point of entry -keeping damage to a minimum |
What is does the size-up procedure include? (FPODP) |
-Facts -Probabilities -Own situation (resources) -Decision -Plan of Operation (SMART) |
In order, what are the 3 priorities in firefighting? |
1. Safely protect people 2. Safely protect property 3. Safely help restore normality |
What does RECEO stand for? |
Rescue Exposures Confinement Extinguishment Overhaul (Ventilation) (Salvage) |
What are some hazards encountered at structure fires? |
-flashover -backdraught -electrical/gas -structural collapse -slips, trips, falls -hazardous material |

Code 1: lights and sirens Code 2: officer’s discretion Code 3: normal road conditions |
Why is a sitrep given? |
The IC relays information back to ESTA as well as painting a picture for oncoming crews |
What is a wordback and when is it given? |
A wordback should be given within 8 minutes of the first appliance arriving on scene. The 5 main sections of a wordback are: -name of officer initiating wordback -situation (ie. structure fire) -status of emergency (ie. increased alarm level, under control etc) -address of incident -optional description of event |
What is SMEACS? |
A framework designed to inform crew of: -what is to be done -how it will be done -individual and group roles It stands for: -Situation -Mission -Execution -Admin and logistics -Command and comms -Safety |
