Ionic bond

A bond that forms because of the attraction of oppositely charged ions.

Covalent bond

A bond where two or more pairs of electrons are shared between two atoms.

Molecule

A neutral particle formed by neutral atoms. (H20 is a molecule because it is formed from H and O which are neutral atoms, NaCl is not a molecule because it is formed from a Na+ and Cl-).

Oxidation number

The charge on an atom. Results from an atom gaining or losing electrons.

Binary Compounds

A compound composed of two types of elements. (C represents carbon)

Chemical symbol

The letters used to represent an element

Chemical formula

The notation using symbols and numbers to represent the composition of a compound. (NaCl represents sodium chloride)

Subscript

The number in a formula that represents how many atoms are present. (H20, 2 is the subscript and it tells you there are 2 hydrogen atoms present.

Coefficient

The number before a formula that tells you how many units or molecules of the formula are present. (3 H2O, 3 is the coefficient and it tells you that here are 3 water molecules present.

Polyatomic ion

An ion composed of more than 1 atom.

Monatomic ion

An ion composed of 1 atom.

Cation

A positively charged ion.

Anion

A negatively charged ion.

Oxyanion

A negative polyatomic ion containing oxygen.
