Identity

The character that makes up a person; how you see yourself, and how others see you.

Assumptions

A thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof.

Ethnocentrism

Evaluation of other cultures according to preconceptions originating in the standards and customs of one's own culture.

Prejudice

Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

Stereotypes

A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.

Tradition

A long standing belief or custom, one that has been handed down from generation to generation. Traditions are important to how individuals identify themselves with communities. Traditions provide precedents for how people should act and behave. Traditions represent connections to the past, to ancestors and history.

Ritual

The performance of actions or procedures in a set ordered and ceremonial way. Rituals make the observation of a tradition formal and important.

Society

A structured community of people bound together by similar traditions, institutions, and nationality.

Culture

The beliefs, customs, practices, and social behavior of a particular group of people. A particular set of beliefs and attitudes that binds a group of people together.

Alienation

The experience of feeling that one has been made an outsider from his or her society and culture.

Obligation

That which a person must do as a legal or moral duty. Honoring an obligation is a way a person can demonstrate his or her connection to society or culture.

Socialization

The process involved when young children are becoming aware of society and learning how they are expected to behave.

Norm

The rules or expectations found within a society or culture.

Epiphany

Epiphany is the point in a work of literature where a character has a sudden insight or realization that changes his or her understanding.(We and They/Little Things are Big)
