Argument

Arguments have three objectives: to explain, to persuade, and to mediate conflicts between positions or readers. Writers make logical claims- supported with reasons, evidence, and different appeals to advance their arguments.

Claims

Must be able to be argued and must require defense through evidence. Effective claims are precise, clear, and properly qualified.

Evidence

This would include quotations, observations, interviews, examples, facts, data, results from a survey or experiments, and when appropriates, personal experiences.

Reasons

Writers must base their claims and ideas on more than opinions when constructing an argument. Reasons demand evidence, and information.

Counter-Argument

Acknowledge and respond to the opposing side of the argument. It is best to acknowledge these other conflicting perspectives and respond to them by addressing their side with evidence.
