Ionic Bond
The electrostatic attraction between ions of opposite charge
Covalent Bond
A bond characterized by the sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two atoms
Molecule
A neutral group of atoms held together by covalent bonds{a neutral particle formed by neutral atoms} (Ex: H2O is a --?-- because it is formed from H and O which are neutral atoms- not ions)
Oxidation Number
The apparent charge on an atom if the electrons in a compound are assigned according to established rules{the charge on an atom. Results from an atom gaining or losing electrons}
Binary Compounds
A compound composed of only two types of elements
Chemical Symbol
A notation using one to three letters to represent an element. (Ex: C represents carbon)
Chemical Formula
The notation using symbols and numbers to represent the composition of a compound. (Ex: NaCl represents sodium chloride)
Subscript
The number in a formula that represents how many atoms are present. (Ex: H2O, 2 is the --?-- and it tells you that there are 2 hydrogen atoms present)
Coefficient
The number before a formula that tells you how many units or molecules of the formula are present. (Ex: 3 H2O, 3 is the --?--and it tells you that there are 3 water molecules present)
Polyatomic Ion
An ion composed of more than 1 atom
Monatomic Ion
An ion composed of 1 atom
Cation
A positively charged ion
Anion
A negatively charged ion
