flimsy
adjective: lacking in physical strength, of inferior workmanship.

Example: The flimsy raft broke apart shortly after the waves picked up in intensity.
predicament
noun: a difficult or unpleasant situation

Example: Can you help me? I can’t figure out how to get out of the predicament I’m in by myself.
deadlocked
adjective: unable to end a disagreement, to have the same number of points or votes as an opponent.

Example: The judge had no alternative other than to dismiss the case; the members of the jury claimed they were hopelessly deadlocked.
surveillance
noun: The act of carefully watching someone or something, especially in order to prevent or detect a crime.

Example: The officers had been keeping the gang under surveillance for more than two weeks.
veiled
adjective: able to be seen or understood but not openly shown or stated: expressed in a way that is not clear or direct.

Example: The newspaper article only made veiled references to the Senator’s previous indiscretions.
dissident
noun: someone who strongly and publicly disagrees with and criticizes a government.

Examples: The dissidents knew full well that they were subject to arrest and incarceration at any moment.
humanitarian
noun: a person who works to make other people’s lives better.

Example: After the earthquake, humanitarian efforts to bring food, medicine, shelter and other basic necessities were hampered by the horrible weather.
keenly
adverb: having or showing the ability to think clearly and to understand what is not obvious or simple about something; very strong and sensitive.

Example: The captain of the ship was keenly aware that the approaching storm could jeopardize the lives of the passengers and crew.
repression
noun: the act of using force to control someone or something, being controlled by force.

Example: Government repression reached its peak with the arrest and jailing of hundreds of dissidents prior to the most recent election.
viable
adjective: capable of being done or used, capable of succeeding.

Example: The NASA engineers were given the task of identifying a viable repair option that could be implemented as quickly as possible with the limited resources already available on the space capsule.
