Antecedent

(Noun) a. Someone or setting that precedes or goes before.


b. Plural form only. Ancestors; forebears.


c. An event that occurs before another, especially on that influences or causes another.


d. The word, phrase, or clause to which a pronoun refers.


Example: Many elements of modern building design have classical antecedents.

Ensue

(Intransitive verb) To follow as a consequence or result.


Example: The floods cause a great deal of suffering, but the famine that ensued devastated the country.

Ephemeral

(Adjective) a. Lasting for a very brief time; fleeting; transitory.


b. Lasting for one day only.


Example: Every year the holiday season generates ephemeral feelings of good will and neighborliness.

Imminent

(Adjective) about to occur; immediate.


Example: The building was condemned because it is in imminent danger of collapsing.

Interim

(Noun) A period of time between two events or periods of time.


(Adjective) Belonging to or taking place during an interval of time; temporary.


Example: The orchestra gave a matinee and an evening concert; in the interim the players snatched a quick meal.

Interminable

Example: I could sense that Uncle Ed was about to begin one of his interminable stories about his boyhood on a potato farm.

Perennial

(Adjective) a. Lasting an indefinitely long time; everlasting


b. Appearing or recurring again and again.


(Noun) a. A plant having a life span of more than two years.


Example: This once lush country is now suffering from a perennial drought.

Precipitate

(Adjective) a. Acting or done hastily or impulsively, without proper consideration


b. Moving with excessive and often foolish speed


c. Occurring suddenly


(Transitive verb)

b. To cause to separate from a chemical solution or suspension.


Example: The army made a precipitate retreat from its exposed position.

Provisional

(Adjective) Provided for the time being; temporary

Retrospective

(Adjective) a. Looking back on or directed toward the past.


b. Applying to or influencing the past; retroactive.


c. Of or relating to an exhibition of an artist's work that is comprehensive and covers a considerable number of years.


Example: Once, in a retrospective mood, my father sketched out his family tree.
