Attaches to opsin, which is in cone cells of retina responsible for vision in bright light and color vision
What is another name for Vitamin A
Retinol
How does vitamin A react with opsin
1)Retinol oxidized to 11-trans-Retinal using Retinol dehydrogenase enzyme. 2) 11-trans-Retinal converted to 11-cis Retinal
3) Reacts with epislon part of lysiene (in opsin) ccreates rhodospin
How is vitamin D3 created?
Ultra violet from sun reacts with cholestrol
What is another name for vitamin D3?
Cholecalciferol
What does Vitamin D3 do?
increases synthesis of Ca2+-binding protien, increases absorption of calcium in intestines. Deficency causes rickets, bones of children become soft, resulting in skeletal deformities.
What does Vitamin E do?
antioxidant. Reducing agent (attacks oxidating agents). Protects molecules from degradation. Removes free radicals.
What does Vitamin K do?
Regulatory function in blood clotting. (modifies prothrombin).
Describe the modification of Prothrombin?
carbon dioxide attaches to Prothrombin creating modified prothrombin (second carboxylic acid group). Calcium attaches created gamma-Carboxyglutamate.
