How are prions different from viruses?
No nucleic acid genome or capsid structure

Prions are not inactivated by formaldehyde, protease, heat, or UV, but viruses are.

Prions can have a very long incubation period.
What are the differences between normal and scrapie prion proteins?
The abnormals have more beta sheets. They are not sensitive to protease, and localize to the cytoplasm instead of the plasma membrane.
What diseases are caused by prions?
vCJD, Kuru
What diseases are caused by animal prions?
Scrapie, mink encephalopathy, BSE, chronic wasting disease of deer and elk, and feline enceph
Who is at risk of prion infection?
People that are in direct contact with animals that have prion disease. There is a link between BSE and vCJD.

Transmission possible with surgical instruments and contaminated vaccines.
How can you test for the presence of prion diseases?
Histology (post mortem)
Detection of PrPres in the brain by IHC, WB, or ELIZA (post mortem)
Tonsillar biopsy for vCJD
Western blot for protease resistance
