The egyptian priest with foot-drop deformity was believed to be what virus?
Poliovirus
What are the three theories of viral origin?
(1) free-living organism (bacteria)
(2) host cell genome
(3) self assembling molecules from complex polymers
Explain the viral origin theory (from bacteria)
free living bacteria moves into cell, progressive loss of bacterial genetic info and functions, form virus
Explain the viral origin theory (from host-cell genome)
Host cell mRNA multiple self-replicates, becomes virus, virus enters cell. multiple self-splicing RNA (from self- replicating RNA derived from most cell mRNA)
Explain the viral origin theory (from complex polymers)
polynucelotides form self-replicating RNA, coevolution occured and self-replicating RNAs move into the cell, form virus genome.
What is the flaw in the self assmbling molecules theory?
Self-replicating RNAs somehow make RNA from the RNA template, which is impossible without a polymerase. Therefore this probably didn't happen in mammalian cells.
