Step Approach to Asthma
• Step 1 (Mild) – SABA, if used more than 2x/wk consider step 2. • Step 2 (Mild persistent) – Low-dose steroid inhaler daily. An LT antagonist or methylxanthine are alternatives for pts over 12 years of age. SABA inhaler for acute symptom control. • Step 3 (Moderate) – Intermediate-dose ICS or low dose ICS with LABA. SABA inhaler for acute symptom control. • Step 4 (Moderate) – Medium dose ICS+ LABA inhaler. SABA inhaler for acute symptom control. • Step 5 – High dose ICS and LABA • Step 6 – Addition of an oral steroid (2 mg/kg/day not to exceed 60 mg/day) used daily. |
