When sizing pictures for printing, the rule of thumb is to _____ the lpi number to figure how many pixels per inch (dpi) you need for your digital picture.
double
A picture that will be printed in a magazine at 133 lines per inch would be how much DPI?
266 dpi
Is the 100 percent view in photoshop the correct print size of the photo?
No
What is the Pixels/inch Web standard
72 p/i
If Resample Image is checked,
pixels are either thrown away or added to the picture. Remember that adding pixels does not add sharpness - they are artificially generated through interpolation.
If Resample Image is unchecked,
Photoshop keeps the same number of pixels in the picture even though the picture is resized. The same number of pixels means that the file size remains constant, and all you are doing is redistributing the pixels in space. The resolution changes because the same number of pixels must fit in a different sized space. Pixels packed in a smaller space mean a higher resolution, while the same pixels in a larger picture mean lower resolution. Remember that resolution is the number of pixels that fit in an inch.
On most commercial printing presses how are intermediate tones between white and ink colors "faked"
by using various sized dots of ink.

The goal when printing halftones on a printing press is to provide a final sized digital file that has a resolution of
2x the halftone screen used for printing.
For example, if a picture will be published in a newspaper printed with an 85 lines per inch halftone screen, then it must be ?? pixels/inch AT THE PRINTED SIZE.
2x85=170
The goal when printing line art is to provide a final sized digital file that has a resolution of ____ pixels/inch
600 pixels/inch
Laser printers can only use how many pixels per inch at printed size?
200
Desktop inkjet printers (Epson, Hewlett-Packard, Canon) use what when printing halftone
A random dot halftone pattern because there is no traditional halftone screen so the traditional formulas don't work.
Color or grayscale photos on Desktop Injet printers require ____ p/i at final size? how much for line art?
200
600
It might be wise to convert all your camera RAW files to DNG anyway because of two reasons
) It's an open architecture that has public specifications. It's not dependent upon the whims of the camera manufacturer with proprietary file formats, and 2) the tweaks you make to the tone of your picture are stored in the DNG file instead of being housed in a separate "sidecar" file. You toning file will never become separated from the toning metadata.
FIle naming constraints:
1. Don't se odd punctuation or characters/
2. Don't put more than one period in the file name. Just right before three-letter suffix.
3. Don't omit 3-letter-suffix
4. Avoid spaces in filenames, doesn't work with web.
Save RAW formats through what?
Bridge
Quick mask advantages
Way to make selection and see feather
Channels carry color information in color pictures, and additional channels can be added to be used
as a place to store selections that might get used more than once.
* carry color of picture and can create alpha channels
Dot gain worst paper to best paper
Worst: Newsprint
Medium: Uncoated Stock
Best: Coated Stock
To convert from printer's dot percent numbers to Photoshop levels:
Photoshop level= 255-(2.55 x percent)
adjustment layers
Tone pictures without changing original.
Layer mask
Hides one part of the image and allows correction on only one part without altering the other part.
Goal of color management
consistent color cross platforms. What you see is what you get on all devices from monitors to printers
Adobe RGB (1998)
has more colors than sRGB and is a color management system that is a device independent working space. sRGB is more for consumer use.
sRGB
Web or consumers use.
Soft and hard proofs
used to estimate how a picture will look when printed on a printing press.
Soft Proof
shown on the monitor, not as accurate as printed proof, but good way to fix problems without having to make a print.
Hard proof
a printed proof used to fix any problems.
What are printer profiles for
adjusts signal going out to monitor of printer. Adjusts any peculiarities.
Pen tool does what?
Makes paths
Way to save simple colors
GIF file
Duotone, must know
WON'T WORK ON THE WEB. For print only.
What are duotones?
pictures intended to be printed in two different colors of ink, usually black and another color. When printed, they often have an overall color cast to them, although black and gray duotones exist to smooth out the picture in high-end publications like a photographer's coffee table book.
duotone screen angles off by ___ percent
15
anti-alias on:
when selecting parts of photographs, when creating type for the web, etc.
anti-alias off:
working with 1-bit bitmaps (aka "line art"), anytime no-fringe edges are desired.
The purpose of the Actions Palette
is to speed up repetitive tasks. It memorizes a series of steps done by the operator, and can play them back on other images.

You want to buy a new monitor for your computer. The manufacturer claims that the screen is 800 pixels wide by 600 pixels high. The specs also claim that the screen resolution is exactly 72 pixels per inch.

How big is the screen in inches?
