Clause
A group of words containing its own subject and verb.
Main Clause
Also known as an independent clause.
Noun Clause
A subordinate clause that acts as a noun.
Adverb Clause
A subordinate clause that modifies a verb, adjective, adverb, or verbal. They tell when, where, how, or why.
Adjective Clause
A subordinate clause that modifies a noun or pronoun, telling what kind or which one. (that, which, who, whom, whose)
Dependent Clause
A clause that can only be part of a sentence.
Independent Clause
A clause that can stand by itself in a sentence.

Relative Pronoun
Begins a subordinate clause and connects it to another idea in the sentence.
Gerund
A form of a verb that acts as a noun.
Simple Sentence
1 independent clause.
Compound Sentence
2 independent clauses.
Complex Sentence
1 independent clause and 1 or more subordinate clauses.
Compound-Complex Sentence
2 or more independent clause and 1 or more subordinate clauses.
Active Voice
The form of a verb that shows its subject performing the action.
Passive Voice
The form of a verb that shows its action performed upon the subject.
Direct Object
A noun, pronoun, or group of words acting as a noun that receives the action of a transitive verb.
Infinitive
A form of a verb that comes from after the word to and acts as a noun, adjective, or adverb.
Subordinating Conjunction
Connects two ideas by making one of them less important.
Adjective
A word used to describe a noun or pronoun.

A word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Appositive
A noun or pronoun placed next to another noun or pronoun to identify, rename, or explain it.
Verbal
A word that acts as a noun and ends in (-ing).
Parallel Structure
The same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance.
