Anatomical planes

Imaginary slices through animals body. Used to describe positions or view point of a body.
Dorsal plane

Divide body between top (dorsal) and bottom (ventral).

Transverse plane

Divides between cranial (front) and the caudal (rear)

Sagittal plane

Dividing between left and right parts.

Median plane or mid sagittal

Divides between equal left and right halves.

Cranial
Towards the head, also towards the front surface of a limb proximal to the carpus or tarsus.

Caudal

Towards the tail, towards back surface of limb proximal to carpus or tarsus.

Rostral

Used only on the head (towards the tip of the nose)

Dorsal

Towards the backbone of the top surface of the body (top front surface of the distal part of the limb).

Ventral

Towards the bottom or the belly (also is the bottom surface distal to the carpus or tarsus).

Palmer

The area on the back part of the front limb including the bottom of the foot.

Plantar

The back of the hind limb including the bottom of the foot.
