Valvular Disease: What affects valves?
Rheumatic heart disease
calcium buildup (elderly)
What changes shape of valves? Damage to the structures in the heart
MI (young/elderly)
Valvular Disease: What causes Valve Disease?
Infection
congenital defect
Calcium buildup
Rheumatic fever
Endocarditis
Pulmonary edema
Left sided heart failure
Valvular Disease: LEFT-SIDE VALVES
Mitral Valve (Bicuspid Valve)
Valve between left atria & left ventricle. Opens down into ventricle. Suspended by chordae tendinae & papillary muscle

Aortic Valve
Valve between left atria & aorta. Opens up into aorta
Valvular Disease: RIGHT-SIDE VALVES
Tricuspid Valve
Valve between right atria & right ventricle. Opens down into ventricle. Suspended by chordae tendinae & papillary muscle.

Pulmonary Valve
Valve between right atria & pulmonary artery. Opens up into pulmonary valve
Valvular Disease: Blood flow
Left side:
Lung - Left aritum/ventricle -aorta-body

Right side:
Vena cava - Rt. atrium/ventricle - pulmonary artery - lung
Valvular Disease: stenosis-what is the blood flow?
Mitral valve, if narrow, causes the valve not to open properly & to obstruct blood flow between left atrium & ventricle. Blood flow reduced.
Aortic stenosis, if narrow, causes the valve to not open properly & to obstruct blood flow between ventricle and aorta.
Valvular Disease: stenosis-Causes
genetic heart defect
Rheumatic fever
Valvular Disease: stenosis-Risk Factors
calcium buildup on valve
Valvular Disease: stenosis-If backs up into left atrium?
Mitral Valve Regurgitation
blood backs up because valve not close properly & leaks up into left atrium from left ventricle during contraction (systole) because valve not able to close completely.Termed “Chronic” if long-term disorder.
Valvular Disease: If backs up into left atrium? Cause
Rheumatic fever
Due to atherosclerosis & hypertension
left-ventricle enlargement
congenital defects
endocarditis
connective tissue disorders
cardiac tumors
syphilis (rare)
Valvular Disease: If backs up into left atrium? Signs & symptoms
Atrial fibrillation
fatigue, exhaustion, lightheadedness
cough, shortness of breath
dyspnea
orthopnea
Valvular Disease: If backs up into left ventricle?
Aortic Valve Regurgitation
Valve doesn't close properly & blood can leak backward through it. This means the left ventricle must pump more blood than normal, and will gradually get bigger because of the extra workload (chronic).
Leaking of aortic valve- blood flows in the reverse direction during ventricular diastole, from the aorta into the left ventricle.
Valvular Disease: If backs up into left ventricle?
Infection or congenital abnormalities
Deterioration of the valve with age
Endocarditis
Rheumatic fever
Pulmonary edema
Left sided heart failure
Valvular Disease: If backs up into left ventricle? Causes
Infection or congenital abnormalities
Deterioration of the valve with age
Endocarditis
Rheumatic fever
Pulmonary edema
Left sided heart failure
Valvular Disease: If backs up into left ventricle? Signs & Symptoms
Fatigue
Shortness of breath
Edema
Heart arrhythmias
Angina pectoris (chest pain)
