Plug valves/cocks

Quarter turn valves

Pros: Simple design, quick open close, leak tight shut off, used to regulate the flow of liquids containing solids and slurries.

Cons: 4” and over require power actuators, cost more then ball valves.

Gate valves

Fully open or fully closed

Pros: minimize pressure drop across the valve when fully opened. Stop flow completely when fully closed. Most designs allow **** off in both directions. Can be used on lines with slurries, heavy oils, varnish, molasses.

Con: can’t be throttled, slow opening and slow closing, require a lot of room for install and operation. Not for use on systems that shock loading may happen, acceptable to thermal or pressure binding. Glob

Globe valves

Meant for throttling. ( fluid nearly makes four 90deg turns to get through.

Pro: good shut off, good throttling properties, require fewer turns to shut or open, available in “Y” and angle configuration.

Cons: Higher pressure drop compared to valves with straight threw patternes.

Main types of disc design for gate valves.

Solid wedge disc

Flexible wedge disc

Spilt wedge disc

Double disc.

Front (Term)

Parts of gate valve.

Three main designs and flows of a globe valve.

Straight pattern

Angle pattern

Y pattern

Best valve for throttling. :A

Best globe valve for throttling: B

A= globe valve

B= Needle valve for very fine throttling.

Types of check valves.

1:lift check

2:swing check

3:non-slam checks.
