Define passive immuntiy

The production of antibodies in an individial from an outside source. You have no direct contact with the pathogen. No lasting immuntiy, no memory cells are produced.

E.g. when antibodies pass to the fetus from the mother through the placenta

What is active immunity

Stimulation of the production of antibodies by an individual's own immune system. Direct contact with the pathogen is required.


Types:


1) natural active immuntiy


2) artificial active immuntiy

What's herd immuntiy

When a sufficient proportion of the population have been vaccinated, making it difficult for the pathogen to spread. Important because it hard to vaccinate everyone in the population.
