intrinsic value
x has intrinsic value if x is desired for its own sake, if has a value in and of itself.

x is wanted for itself, net to promote some other end
instrumental value
x is not valued for its own sake, out because it promotes some other end. x helps us get something else of value

having the capacity to experience happiness and pain
the principle of utility greatest happiness principle
we should act as to create the greatest amount of happiness for greatest number of people.
Acts rare
moral in proportion to how much happiness they produce, and immoral it they fail to maximize happiness.
Utilitarianism=>
lack to consequense, if consequences maximized happiness then the act is goo.

possitive thing about Utilitarianism
it encourage us to consider others and to treaat them well.

it provide us with an objective standart of morality to be followed in all cases( maximize happiness).
negative thing about Utilitarianism
we dont hav acess to all of the consequences of an act.

no child left behind(FCAT)

its too demanding
it can justify unjust acts.
it can allow some to suffer if it promote greater hapiness for the many
e.g. procecuting the innocent to stop lyinching, harvesting organs of the homeless.
