3 important zero order drugs
Aspirin (high doses), phenytoin, and ethanol (except at low blood concentrations)
Define agonist
Drug that binds to a receptor and activates it
Define partial agonist
Drug that binds to a receptor but does not elicit a 100% response. It will elicit a partial response when administered alone. When administered with a full agonist, it acts as an antagonist b/c it displaces the full agonist from the receptor.
Define competitive antagonist
Binds to receptor without activating the effector system. Can be overcome by increasing agonist dose. See a parallel right shit in dos response curve.
Define noncompetitive antagonist
Binds to receptor without activating the effector system. Cannot be overcome by increasing agonist dose. Seen as a downward shift in dose response.
