Everyday gases

Hydrogen-the sun and stars are made up of hydrogen and it makes up 90% of the universe

Displacement reaction

A displacement reaction occurs when a more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from a compound. A thermite reaction is an example of a displacement reaction

Redox reaction

Redox reaction is a reaction in which both reduction and oxidation occurs. Reduction is the gain of electrons and oxidation is the loss of electrons. example: calcium and zinc, calcium experiences oxidation since it is higher on the activity series, therefore zinc experiences reduction.

Thermite reaction

A thermite reaction is when iron oxide and aluminum powder react to create molten iron. Thid can occur when magnesium ribbon is burned in a iron/aluminium solution. This is an exodatic reaction and creates a lot of heat and light.

Common use

-carbon dioxide-used in fizzy drinks/can be used for extinguishers

-Hydrogen- used in rocket ships

-Helium- used in hot air balloons
