What the North's original plan at the beginning of the war?

To reunite the country.

What plan did the North create?

The Anaconda Plan. This would barricade all South ports to prevent the export of cotton, attempt to gain control of the Mississippi River, and try to capture Richmond, VA.

What plan did the South create?

To conduct a defensive war where they would try to keep as much land as possible. Some thought that their determination to be independent would make the North tire of war. As well, the South wanted to get support from Britain and France who may pressure the North to end the war.

Who served as the Union's president?

Abraham Lincoln.

Who served as the Confederacy's president?

Jefferson Davis.

How did Abraham Lincoln help the Union?

He believed that the Union was never to be broken, was well-read, obtained occupations in different areas, had been a lawyer before politics, and had a sense of humor that saved him from despair.

How did Jefferson Davis help the Confederacy?

He was raised into the military practice, fought in the Mexican War, served as Secretary of War (Franklin Pierce), was a U.S. Senator, and believed in states' rights as well as the South fighting for the freedom cherished by the Founding Fathers.
