What is the preamble?
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
What is federalism?
A republican form of government where power is shared between the national (federal) government and the states
Who was James Madison?
Authored “Virginia Plan” and most of the Bill of Rights. “If men were angels, no government would be necessary.” From Virginia.
What was the Virginia Plan?
Proposed 3 branches of government: executive, legislative, judicial. Two legislative houses both based on POPULATION. Large states supported it.
What was the New Jersey plan?
One legislative house—each state had ONE VOTE . Small states supported it.
What does ratify mean?
An official approval—the Constitution needed 9 of the 13 states to ratify it for it to become official
What does anti-federalists mean?
•Most powers should remain with the states—fear of strong central government
•Wanted legislative branch to have more power than executive branch
•Insisted a Bill of Rights necessary to protect people’s rights
