4 Causes of the Civil War

1. State Rights: The south felt that the rights of the individual southern states were taking a back seat to the growing power of the Federal government.




2. Slavery: Could slavery continue to exist in the south with growing disapproval of the north?




3. Fanaticism: Both the north and south had their share of people who believed that only war would settle the problem regarding slavery.




4. Economic Conflict and the Struggle for Power: The south was at a disadvantage in the growing economic success of the north. In many ways the south was an economic colony of north.

Terms of The Compromise of 1850

1. California would be admitted as a free state


2. New Mexico and Utah would have popular sovereignty


3. The slave trade in Washington D.C. would be abolished, but not slavery


4. A new fugitive slave law to compensate the south for the admittance of California

The Caning of Sumner

Charles Sumner blames Bleeding Kansas on Southerners in a speech. Specifically calls Andrew Butler a barbarian. Butler's nephew beats Sumner half to death on Senate floor.

Bleeding Kansas

People flood to Kansas so they can vote and sway free/slave vote upon its acceptance to the Union. Kansas is made a slave state. John Brown, an abolitionist, comes in, kills several pro-slavery settlers.

Wilmont Proviso

Says that slavery should be prohibited in any territory acquired from Mexico.

Popular Sovreignty

People living in territories should decide for themselves if they wanted to be a free or slave state.

Oregon Treaty of 1846

1. Ends joint occupation of Oregon by England and U.S.


2. U.S. finally reaches from Atlantic to Pacific

Americans immigrate to Texas to improve Mexican economy. Texans basically form their own gov. Leader, Stephen Austin goes to talk to Santa Anna about anger, is jailed. Mexico attack Texas.

Cherokee Nation VS Georgia

NatAms in GA say they are a foreign nation. GA says, nah, you're a domestic, dependent nation. GA wouldn't give up their land.

Theory of Nullification

John C. Calhoun. States give government its power, therefore, the state has the right to judge the constitutionality of a law. If it's unconstitutional, the state doesn't have to obey it.
