Whigs
A political party that began in 1834 with the opponents of Andrew Jackson, who they thought was treating the presidency like a monarchy.
Democrats
Advocates of democracy. People who believe in the political or social equality of all people.
American Republican Party
A political party that first came to power in 1860 with the election of Abraham Lincoln to the presidency and presided over the American Civil War and Reconstruction. It replaced the Whigs as the major opposition to the democratic party.
Monroe Doctrine
A U.S. doctrine which, stated that European powers were no longer to colonize or interfere with the affairs of the newly independent states of the Americas and the United States would not interfere with existing colonies or their dependencies in the Western Hemisphere.
Missouri Compromise
Measures passed by the U.S. Congress to end the first of a series of crises concerning the extension of slavery.
