A riot in Boston (March 5, 1770) arising from the resentment of Boston colonists toward British troops quartered in the city, in which the troops fired on the mob and killed several persons.
Boston Massacre
A person who journeys, especially a long distance, to some sacred place as an act of religious devotion.
Pilgrims
The first constitution of the 13 American states, adopted in 1781 and replaced in 1789 by the constitution of the United States.
Articles of Confederation
The convention of United States statesmen who drafted the United States Constitution in 1787
Constitutional Convention
to refuse to have dealings with (a person, organization, etc.) or refuse to buy (a product) as a protest or means of coercion
Boycott
A formal statement of the fundamental rights of the people of the United States, incorporated in the constitution as Amendments 1–10, and in all state constitutions.
Bill of Rights
The war in America in which France and its Indian allies opposed England 1754–60: ended by Treaty of Paris in 1763.
French and Indian War
A journey made by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, to explore the American Northwest, newly purchased from France, and some territories beyond. The expedition started from St. Louis, Missouri, and moved up the Missouri River and down the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean. The information that Lewis and Clark gathered was of great help in the settlement of the West. ( See also Louisiana Purchase.)
Lewis and Clark Expedition
The act of Congress in 1787 providing for the government of the Northwest Territory and setting forth the steps by which its subdivisions might become states.
Northwest Ordinance of 1787
An agreement between large and small states reached during the Philadelphia Convention of 1787 that in part defined the legislative structure and representation that each state would have under the United States Constitution. It proposed a bicameral legislature, resulting in the current United States Senate and House of Representatives.

(1585) Colonists landed on first English colony, an island off the coast of North Carolina. Sir Walter Raleigh raised money to outfit the colony.
Roanoake
(1607) 10f colonists sailed into Chesapeake Bay and built homes along James River in Virginia.
Jamestown
A young soldier and explorer helped to save Jamestown. He set up rules that forced colonists to work and plant crops if they wished to eat.
John Smith
Daughter of Powhatan, most powerful chief in area. Married John Rolfe, a Jamestwon tobacco planter.
Pocahantas
At least 15 black men and 17 black women were living in Virginia. The same year a dutch ship arrived with 20 Africans who were sold toVirginians who needed laborers to grow tobacco.
African Slavery 1619
In the 1700s English sailors began to refer this as the passage of slave trading ships west across the Atlantic Ocean.
Middle Passage
In the 1600s, English settlers who sought religious freedom in the Americas.
Pilgrims
1620, Mayflower landed here off shore of Cape Cod in Massachusettes. A group of separatists and some other English people won a charter to set up a colony in Virginia- they landed in Massachusettes.
Plymouth Colony
A 1639 plan of government in the Puritan colony in Connecticut.
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
Found Colony of Pennsylvania. He was a Quaker, despised religions in England.
William Penn/ Pennsylvania
Protestant reformers who believe in the equality of all people.
Quakers
Colonial trade route between New England, the West Indies, and Africa.
Triangular Trade
Series of hearing in county courts to prosecute people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts.
Salem Witch Trials
Not strictly enforcing parliamentary laws meant to keep colonies obedient. Considered contributing factor to American Revolution because it allowed colonies to be accustomed to idea of self government.
Salutary Neglect
A war that took place from 1754 to 1763 that led to the end of the French power in North America.
French and Indian War
Lake George, New York atrocities were comitted against Indians and surrendering British soldiers.
Fort William Henry Massacre
Novel gave an idealized view of relations between whites and Native Americans on the frontier.
