New Negroes
An individual planter purchased a small number of these newly arrived Africans. They were often depressed, and slaves that had been on the plantations longer had to help them with their new life.
Enlightenment
movement of ideas of deism. These ideas encouraged people to study the world around them, to think for themselves, and to find a natural order. They had meetings to discuss these ideas. Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were part of this movement.

Olaudah Equiano

A type of indentured servant who could negotiate their own contracts and usually served for shorter time periods than indentured servants.

A powerful speaker, he was a revivalist who preached all around about sin and salvation and moved his congregations to despair and begging for mercy from God.
Task system
When slaves were given certain tasks per day, such as a patch of land to be cultivated, and if they finished them early, they would get the remainder of the day off to do what they liked. This gave slaves a little more control over the pace of their work and the motivation to defend their limits if their masters tried to over-task them.
