|
One of the two battle zones during WWI. Britain and France (and later the US) battled against Germany on the Western Front.

|
Two weeks after the outbreak of war in Europe, President Wilson called on Americans to be "neutral in fact as well as in name, impartial in thought as well as in action." If Wilson kept the US out of war maybe the war would have an earlier end.

Lusitania
|
Germany warned all ships with British flags would be destroyed. Two weeks later, a German U-boat of the coast of Ireland torpedoed the British luxury liner Lusitania, killing 1,198 people, 128 of them Americans. The event created tension between the two nations which was later cleared when Germany announce they wouldn't attack passenger ships.

Zimmerman Telegram
|
A telegram sent by German's foreign secretary, Arthur Zimmerman, to the German minister in Mexico city. Zimmerman urged Mexico to join the Central Powers and promised to help Mexico regain "the lost territory of New Mexico, Texas and Arizona. This event caused the US to enter the war.

Selective Service Act
|
In May 1917 it underlined the increasing power of the state over ordinary citizens. With the process of draft registration, on a single day, June 5, 1917, more than 9.5 million men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty were processed for military service in their local voting precincts.

|
