Freedmans Bureau

1865 - Congress & Lincoln to combat Labour contracts

14th Ammendment/Due Process

1866 - Equal Protection under the law regardless of race/gender - in response to white riots

15th Ammendment

1870 - If you are born in the U.S you are a U.S citizen & can vote regardless of race/servitude. Because of this more African Americans voted than whites by far and some African Americans were in Congress.

Black Codes

Right after the civil war - Racial laws used to suppress/enslave black people. Being homeless/jobless was a crime and sent you to jail. Had to have documentation but most were illiterate.

Knights of the Klum Kluks Klan

1868 - Social group formed. Prevented Black people from accessing polls & freedmans Bureau. Killed African Americans and Democrats in Control of the South
