Lusitania
Lusitania was a British passenger ship that was sunk by a German U-boat in May 7th, 1915. Out of 1,198 passengers lost 128 were Americans. Germany said it was ammunition significance is that this is what caused Americans to join the war.
The Fourteen Points
The Fourteen Points was statement given on the 8th of January 1918 by President Woodrow Wilson declaring the World War 1. The Fourteen points promoted equality The points were divided into three groups. The first five points were issues that Wilson believed had to be addressed to prevent another war. The Next eight points dealt with boundary changes. Fourteenth point was called for a creation of an international organization to address diplomatic crises like those that had sparked the war. (League of Nations)
Ulysses S Grant
He was the 18th president of United States and he was also a Union general Military Commander during civil war. In 1862 Grant had his first major victory when he captured Fort Donelson in Tennessee. Significance is that his presidency was marked by a series of scandals but he did have some positive accomplishments during his presidency and one of them is that he signed a bill to create the department of Justice, this allowed African American to become U.S citizens.
Doughboys
They were American Soldiers during ww1. American infantrymen were nicknamed doughboys because of the white belts they wore, which they cleaned with pipe clay, or ‘’dough’’. Significance of why they were also called dough boys because Dough is usually before you cook meaning its not ready and they were not ready to fight most of them were untrained. Most doughboys had never ventured far from the farms or small towns where they lived.
Significance is that because from where they lived and came from they were shocked by unexpected horrors of battlefield.
Alvin C York
He was one of the most famous American war heroes ever. He was drafted into U.S army in 1917 and the next year in Battle of the Argonne forest, armed only with rifle and revolver and killed 25 Germans and captured 132 prisoners with six other doughboys. Significance is that for his heroic acts, became a celebrity when he returned to United States and he was also offered lot of money to talk about war but he refused to accept money for speaking about the war or writing about it, because he thought it was wrong to profit from what he had done.
Louis armstrong
Louis Armstrong was most famous Jazz trumpet player during early 20th century in New Orleans, Origin of Jazz. He was famous for his astounding sense of rhythm and his ability to improvise. First band he joined was in 1922, Oliver’s group which became known as creole Jazz Band. Significance is that he is still remembered as most important and influential musician in the history of Jazz.
SNCC
Stands for student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. It was one of the organizations of the American Civil Right movements in the 1960s. It all started by students at Shaw University. It would soon create one of the most important student activist movements in the nation history.
Black Tuesday
The most catastrophic stock market crash in the history of the United States, Black Tuesday took place on October 29, 1929 and was when the price of stocks completely collapsed. The number of shares dumped that day was a record 16.4 million. Additional millions of shares could not find buyers. People who had bought stocks on credit were stuck with huge debts as the prices plummeted, while others lost most of their savings.
Stonewall jackson
He was a confederate general during civil war and he was known as one of the powerful and great commander who earned his nickname at Bull Run and earned his reputation by grabbing success from the jaws of defeat time and again. He was very fearless and even he is the commander he fought in the front row with other soldiers. He died from getting shot by his own man during the war by accident.
john Wilkes Booth
He was a 26-year-old stage actor and Southern sympathizer that shot Lincoln on stage on April 14th, 1865. When he was escaping, he caught his spur on one of the flags draped actors the front of the box and he landed hard on his left lag that it broke. The audience think he said ‘’Thus be it ever to tyrants’’ when he broke his leg. Then he limped off the stage and escaped for 12 days until he got caught in a tobacco shop. The Union cavalry burned the building on fire where Booth was in. They still don’t know if he was shot by the cavalry or he killed him self. When Cavalry dragged his body out he wasn’t quit dead and they think he said ‘’ Tell my mother I died for my Country I did what I though was the best’ or ‘’Useless Useless’’
Black Codes
It's the discriminatory law passed by Southern states in 1865 and 1866 in United States after the civil war. These laws had the intent and the effect of restricting African Americans freedoms, prohibiting such activities as traveling without permits, carrying weapons, serving on juries, testifying against whites and marrying whites
Langston Hughes
During the Harlem Renaissance, people began to express a new pride in their culture and literature. Langston Hughes was the movement’s best know poet. His poems, published in the 1920’s, described the difficult lives of working class African Americans. This was importance because he was able to portray the problems of Harlem (overcrowding, poverty) in a tempo of jazz and blues that appealed to the Harlem Renaissance time and evoked hope for the people.
Scopes trial
A sensational 1925 court case in which the biology teacher John T. Scopes was tired for challenging a Tennessee law that outlawed the teaching of evolution.
