Militarism

the policy of building up armed forces in agressive preparedness for war.

In WW1, the group of nations that opposed the central powers. Originally included G.B., France, and Russia. (Later joined by the U.S. and Italy)

group of nations that opposed the allies in WW1, consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire.

An unoccupied region between opposing armies

trench warfare

military operations in which the opposing forces attack and counterattack from systems of fortified ditches rather than on an open battlefield.

A british passenger ship that was sunk by a German U-Boat in 1915

Zimmerman Note

message sent in 1917 by the German foreign minister to the German ambasssador in Mexico, proposing a german-mexican alliance and promising to help Mexico reclaim Texas, New mexico, and Arizon if the U.S. entered WW1.

law enacted in 1917 that required men to register for military service.

Convoy system

the protection of merchant ships from U-boat attacks by having the ships travel in large groups protected by warships.

a person who refuses, on moral grounds, to participate in warfare.

military operations that depends on motorized vehicles such as tanks and aircraft

War industries Board

an agency established during WW1 to increase efficency and discourage waste in war-related industry.

Espionage and Sedition Acts

2 laws enacted in 1917 and 1918 that imposed harsh penalities on anyone interfering with or speaking against the u.s. participation in ww1.

large scale movement of african americans from the south to northern cities in the early 20th century

a speech by Wilson delivered to congress. proposed that nations have no secret treaties, freedom of the sea for all, no more tariffs to allow for free trade, and reduced arms.
