what is its main job?

To propose bills, and revise bills that have been vetoed.

What powers do they have?

They have the power to make bills into laws. If The legislative branch sends a bill to the president and the president vetoes it(cancels) then the bill gets sent back to the house and the senate to be revised. After the revision, the senate and the house must both vote at least ⅔ vote yes for the bill in order for it to become a law.
