1.

When stopped in traffic leave 1 car length between front bumper of your car and the car in front of you. If that vehicle stalls or becomes disabled you can maneuver around it without having to back up.

2.

Starting up at intersections, look left, right, then back to the left to clear the intersections of any hazards. Also, check rear view mirrors.

3.

Count 1, 2, 3 after vehicle ahead starts to move, prior to placing your vehicle in motion to establish a space cushion.

4.

4 to 6 seconds following time for speeds under 30 MPH, 6 to 8 seconds for speeds over 30 MPH, to give you time to react to any changes. It eliminates being fixed on the car ahead.

5.

Check your mirrors every 5 to 8 seconds using the triangle viewing method to be aware of your surroundings.

6.

Scan steering wheels of parked cars to determine if vehicle is occupied or presents any hazard.

7.

Stale green lights, establish a point of decision between front bumper of your vehicle and crosswalk when approaching a stale green light. Pending the light changing this point of decision is a go or no go point of decision.

8.

8 to 12 seconds of eye lead time. This is the depth at which your eyes should be most of the time while driving.

9.

Pulling from curb put on left signal, check left mirror, look over left shoulder and check right mirror for tail swing.

10.

Establish eye to eye contact by using horn, lights, and signals. Only then can you expect the other person to act in reasonable or predictable.
