|
Depresses western MA farmer; led approx. 1500 fellow farmers in revolt against state legislature in Boston in 1786; State officials easily ended Shays's Rebellion and pardoned all but two of the would-be revolutionaries. Shays escaped to VT and finally settled in NY. His revolt was only one of many launched against state governments in the mid-1780s, and prompted prominent Americans to discuss amending the Articles of Confederation.
