What are the factors that affect the rate of dissolving?

Temperature, Size of pieces & Stirring

What is viscosity?

Viscosity is how fast a fluid flows. It is determined by the fluids friction that prevents it from flowing. The greater the friction the higher viscosity.

What affects the Viscosity of a fluid?

Temperature when the temperature increases the fluid will flow faster. When temperature decreases fluid will flow slower.

How do you test a liquids viscosity?

The ramp test

What is density?

Density is the amount of matter in a given volume.

Substances with higher density than the density of the substance it is placed in will sink. If it has lower density the. It will float.

What is the formula for density?

Mass divided by volume

What is the unit for liquids & gasses ?

g ml kg l

What is the unit used for solids?

g cm3

How does temperature affect viscosity, density and matter

Viscosity changes with temperature density does not change as long as temperature stays the same. Particles in a given volume will stay the same if the temp is kept constant

What is buoyancy?

Buoyancy is the tendency of a substance to float

How does density affect a substances buoyancy?

If it is dense than water object will sink.

If it is less dense object will float

If it has the same density as water the object will hover

What is the formula for buoyancy?

Weight in air - weight in liquid

What is pressure what is it measured in?

Pressure is the amount of force applied onto a given area it is measured in Pa

What is pascal’s law?

Pascal’s law says that an enclosed fluid will transmit pressure equally in all directions.

What happens when you go deeper and deeper into the ocean?

The deeper you go the greater the pressure will be because of the weight of the water above

What is the bends?

It is when nitrogen bubbles out of the blood and tissue causing pain and can be fatal if not treated quickly and properly. Divers get the bends when they go back to surface to quickly.

How can the bends be treated?

Divers who have the bends are put in a hyperbaric chamber it controls the pressure inside it.

How do submariners work?

Submarines have to ballast tanks that they either fill up with water or air

What are the three stages submarines go through in the water ?explain each one

Floating ballast tanks are filled with air. The submarine becomes less dense than water with the air so It floats.

Diving the ballast tanks get rid of the air and replaces it with water. The submarine will sink because the density of it and the water is denser than the water surrounding it.

Resurfacing air is pushed into tanks the tanks forcing the water out.

What does hydrophobic mean?

It means does not dissolve in water

What is a slurry?

A slurry is a mixture of water and solids. Slurry technology transports solids in water

What does saturated and unsaturated mean ?

A saturated solution means that no solutes can be dissolved

A unsaturated solution means that more solutes can be dissolved.

What does saturation point mean?

It means that it is to the point where no more solutes can be dissolved in fixed volume and temp

What are valves ?

They are devices that control the flow of fluid

What is a pure substance?

A pure substance only has one type of matter.

What is a mixture?

A mixture is made up of two or more substances

What is a heterogeneous/mechanical mixture

Mixtures in which you can see the different substances in it

What is a solution/homogeneous mixture?

A mixture in which you cannot see the different substances in it

What is a suspension ?

A suspension is a cloudy mixture where small pieces of one substance is held within another substance. If they are left u disturbed parts will separate.

What is a collid ?

A collies is a cloudy mixture in which the pieces are so small that they can’t separate

What does WHMIS stand for?

Workplace

Hazardous

Material

Information

System

What are fluids?

A fluid is anything that flows and has no fixed shape

What is a aqueous solution ?

It is a solution that has water as the solvent

What is a solution ?

A solution has a solute & solvent

What is thermal pollution?

Thermal pollution is the decrease of oxygen in water caused by plants that use water from lakes or rivers as a coolant if water is not cooled Dow before returning it to the lake it could cause a serious affect on the environment because the solubility of a gas in a liquid solvent decreases as the temperature increases.
