Appeasement

-the action of consenting to demands of a person, nation, or group in order to create a state of peace

Blitzkrieg

Propaganda

Internment Camps

-type of prison camp used generally during times of war to confine enemy personnel

-In 1942 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Americans put Japanese Americans in these camps because they feared they might be loyal to Japan

Nanking Massacre/Rape of Nanking

-acts of mass rape and murder of the people of Nanking, China committed by the Japanese troops throughout a six-week period starting in December 1937 and continuing through 1938


-considered the single worst atrocity during WWII in the European and Pacific war theaters


-300,000 deaths occurred


Maginot Line

-constructed in the 1930s along the French and German border in reaction to the experience France had in WWI


-attempted to prevent German invasion but was unsuccessful


-intricate system of large underground fortresses as well as blockhouses and bunkers


-named after Minister of War Andre Maginot

Women's Ordinance Workers

-women workers during WWII who contributed to the war effort


-Rosie the Riveter was the popular poster woman during this time promoting women in the workplace


-these women occupied a large majority of the workforce during this time, leaving domestic jobs and taking over jobs of men fighting in the war


-helped overcome the labor shortage as more men went overseas to fight

Isolationism

-policy of remaining separated from the affairs and interests of other groups, especially in the political affairs of other countries


-belief that limiting international involvement would keep the country from being drawn into dangerous conflicts


-US used this policy during WWII in the 1930s

Nazi New Order/New Order of Europe

-Nazi Germany wanted to impose on the conquered lands under its control


-establishment began long before the start of WWII but was publicly announced by Hitler in 1941


-entailed the creation of a pan-German racial state according to Nazi Ideology to ensure the white race remained superior to all others, the expansion of territory for Germany, and the annihilation/extermination of Jews and Slavic people.

Total War

-war that is unrestricted in the weapons being used, the territory/people involved, or the objectives being pursued


-entire economy is subject to what the government needs


-civilians and cities took a major beating from these tactics because food, transportation, factories, and vehicles were often attacked and bombed

Yalta Conference

-WWII meeting of the heads of government of the US (FDR), UK (Winston Churchill), and the Soviet Union (Joseph Stalin) to decide how to bring WWII to an end and quickly with reorganization plans


-the Soviet Union wanted lands that once belonged to the old Russian Empire and war reparations from Germany for damages in WWI and WWII


-the US and UK wanted democratic governments in Eastern European countries


-Germany was divided into two independent sections, East and West, the east governed by Russia and the west by the US and England


Unconditional surrender

-surrender in which no guarantees are given to the surrendering party
