Adrenal cortex

Outer section of each adrenal gland

Adrenaline

Produced by the adrenal medulla, called epinephrine. Increases heart rate and blood pressure.

Aldosterone

Male hormone produced by the testes and to a lesser extent by the adrenal cortex.

Androgen

Male hormone produced by the testes and to a lesser extent by the adrenal cortex

Calcitonin

Produced by the thyroid gland, lowers blood calcium

Cortisol

Produced by the adrenal cortex, increases blood sugar

Electrolyte

Mineral salt found in the blood and tissues, and necessary for proper functioning of cells

Epinephrine

Increases heart rate, blood pressure and dilates airways

Estrogen

Female hormone produced by the ovaries

Follicle-stimulating hormone

Produced by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. FSH stimulates hormone secretion and egg production by the ovaries and sperm production by the testes

Glucagons

Hormone produced by the alpha cells of the pancreas

Growth hormone

Stimulates the growth of bones and tissues

Homeostasis

Tendency of an organism to maintain a constant internal environment

Hormone

Substance produced by an endocrine gland that travels through the blood to a distant organ or gland where it influences the structure or function of that organ or gland

Insulin

Produced by the beta islet cells of the pancreas. Insulin lowers blood sugars by transport and conversion of glucose to glycogen

Luteinizing hormone

Produced by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. LH stimulates ovulation in females and testerone secretion in males

Oxytocin

Secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Stimulates contraction of uterus during labor and childbirth.

Parathormone

Increases blood calcium

Parathyroid gland

Four small endocrine glands on the posterior side of the thyroid gland

Pituitary gland

Endocrine gland at the base of the brain, composed of an anterior lobe and posterior lobe

Prolactin

Produced by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, promotes milk secretion

Somatotropin

Growth hormone

Thyroid gland

Endocrine gland in the neck

Thyroid stimulating hormone

Acts on the thyroid gland to stimulate its function

Vasopressin

Screted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland, also called antidiuretic hormone

A condition caused by inadequate secretion of vasopressin or antidiuretic hormone

Diabetes mellitus

A disorder of carbohydrate metabolism

Dwarfism

A condition of being abnormally small caused by deficiency of growth hormone

Gigantism

A condition in which there is excessive development of the body or of a body part caused by overproduction of growth hormone

Myxedema

An acquired condition that is due to a deficiency in the secretion of thyroid hormones

Sulfonylurea

Anterior chamber

Area behind the cornea in front of the lens and iris. It contains aqueous humor.

Aqueous humor

Fluid produced by the ciliary body and found in the anterior chamber

Choroid

Middle, vascular layer of the eye, between the retina and the sclera

Conjunctiva

Delicate membrane lining the eyelids and covering the anterior eyeball

Iris

Colored portion of the eye

Lens

Transparent, biconvex body behind the pupil of the eye. It bends light rays to bring them into focus on the retina

Optic nerve

Cranial nerve carrying impulses from the retina to the brain

Pupil

Dark opening of the eye , surrounded by the iris, through which light rays pass

Refraction

Bending of light rays by the cornea, lens, and fluids of the eye to bring the rays into focus on the retina

Auditory canal

Channel that leads from the pinna to the eardrum

Auditory nerve fibers

Carry impulses from the inner ear to the brain. These fibers compose the vestibulocochlear nerve.

Auricle

Flap of the ear, the protruding part of the external ear, or pinna

Cerumen

Waxy substance secreted by the external ear, also called ear wax

Labyrinth

Maze-like series of canal of the inner ear. This includes cochlea, vestibule, and sometimes semicircular canal.
