1662

A law is put into place in Virginia which states that a child born to a slave automatically becomes a slave.

1712

Nine whites are killed, and eighteen slaves are killed in an alleged slave revolt in New York City.

1788

Constitution adopted, and declares that a slave is ⅗ of a person in deciding congressional representation, and tax apportionment.

1820

Missouri Compromise enacted, which means there is no slavery above the Missouri border. Maine enters the Union as a free state, and Missouri enters as a slave state.

1831

Nat Turner leads a violent rebellion in Virginia, killing at least 57 whites.

1850

Missouri Compromise allows California in as a free state, and Mexico and Utah are determined by popular sovereignty. This bans slave trade in Washington D.C.

1857

A Supreme Court case(Dred Scott V.S. Sanford) rules that all slaves, ex. Slaves, and descendants of slaves are denied citizenship.

1860

Abraham Lincoln elected President.

1863

All slaves freed in rebellion, by Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

1865

Thirteenth Amendment abolishes slavery all over the Country.

1866

Two African Americans sit in Massachusetts legislature, and this is the first time that black representatives have participated in this branch of the government.
